Well, hopefully I've fixed my computer problem--the damn thing was overclocked! The core voltage was set to 1.85 volts in the BIOS, but according to AMD, it's supposed to be 1.75 volts for a 1.2 GHz processor. The motherboard manual says to leave it on the default, but the manual is wrong not only about that, but several other things as well.
